Previously titled “Kizie Aur Manny”, “Dil Bechara” went on floors in 2018. It was Sushant’s last movie, but the first for film director, Mukesh Chhabra who was working as a casting director previously.
The movie was scheduled to release on May 8th in the theatres. But due to the Covid-19 situation, there was a halt on its release. It was released on the OTT platform Hotstar+Disney on July 24th, 2020.
During the making of the film, some movie critics had spread gossips to tarnish Sushant’s image. There were rumors about Sushant having harassed Sanjana Sanghi, who was the female lead in the movie. Later, Sanjhana had to come out and nib the rumors and clarifying that Sushant had never misbehaved with her.
Dil Bechara was made available to everyone that had access to Hotstar + Disney across India, US, UK, and Canada. Even those fans of Sushant who didn’t have subscription of Hotstar were able to watch the movie. It was a gift for the fans.
Speaking of gifts, choreographer and director Farah Khan refused to charge any money for choreographing the title track of Dil Bechara. It was her gift for the director and the immensely talented writer. The song was shot in a single take and Sushant Singh Rajput was breath-taking in his outstanding rendition.
The music of Dil Bechara has been composed by music maestro, AR Rahman. Apart from the dance number, Dil Bechara, other soul-stirring notes from the film are Afreeda, Khulke Jeene Ka, Taare Ginn, Maskhari, Main Tumhara, Friendzone, Mera Naam Kizzie.
Against a production cost of 38 crores, Dil Bechara was sold to Hotstar for 50 crores. That is a 12 crores profit straight away. The film gathered a whopping 95 million views in the first 24 hours. If you follow maths, then this film would have collected more 2000 crores on Day 1, had it released on the theatres with the tickets prices at 250.
