Bollywood and Indian cricket are two diverse and different worlds and have mingled in strange ways. The romantic links between these two worlds are nothing new but have existed for decades. Nawab Pataudi and Sharmila Tagore did it before it was cool. And then Sharcame in the modern-day kids like Virat-Anushka, Yuvraj-Hazel, and Harbhajan-Geeta. The list is pretty endless from here if you were to consider all the flings and rumors.
However, one of the most steamy-affairs involving two of the reigning stars from their respective fields in their times remains unheard of by the 90s kid who are adults today or the Y2K kids.
During the mid-80s too, the steamy romance between a B’town beauty and cricket hunk that became the centre of tea-time gossip produced by Tabloids was between Amrita Singh and the Indian Cricket Player, Ravi Shastri.
Oh yes.. in case most of you knew her only as Saif Ali Khan’s ex, and Sara Ali Khan’s actor mother, trust us. There’s more to Amrita Singh than you know. Theirs’s was a much gossiped romance which was steamed further when the duo agreed to pose for the cover of Cine Blitz magazine. That was back in November 1986. Here’s the image, speaks a lot by itself, doesn’t it?
Ravi Shastri was one of the most dashing players of the 80s and was at the peak of his cricket career. Having debuted opposite Sunny Deol in Betaab, actress Amrita Singh’s career in tinsel town was raising in leaps and bounces. Almost as soon as they happen to meet each other, the cricketer was blown over with the damsel’s beauty, Amrita couldn’t escape cupid’s arrow either. And then reports came out that Amrita and Ravi were allegedly spotted ‘cooing at a New York restaurant’. Rumors that hit the town suggested that the handsome cricketer had slid a blingy ring down the Chameli Ki Shaadi star’s ring finger.
There’s was certainly a serious affair and the two was all set to take the plunge, but then destiny struck hard.
In an interview, Ravi Shashti revealed, “I definitely don’t want an actress wife. I am chauvinistic. Her home should be her first priority.”
“At the moment I’m too involved in my career to give it up. But I’m sure after a couple of years, I will be ready to become a full-time wife and mother,” came in Amrita’s response. But that didn’t float the boat for either of them.
The allegedly engaged couple were destined for a break-up. Shastri exchanged vows with Ritu Singh in 1990. In the autumn of the following year, Amrita decided to marry 11 years younger Saif Ali Khan after dating him briefly. The marriage culminated into a divorce in 2004, Amrita secured the custody of both of Saif’s children with her, Sara Ali Khan and Ibrahim Ali Khan.
